Indigenous Men, Their Families and Health

Available only to male students enrolled in the Diploma of Indigenous Health.

Current issues of male health, epidemiology and demographics. Male life milestones and crises. Male-female relations. Introduction to women’s and maternal health care. Male sexuality. Men in indigenous society.

Learning Objectives:

  1. know of the current health status of indigenous men;
  2. be able to compare this status with that of indigenous men in other societies and with other Australian men;
  3. identify the major causes of morbidity and mortality in indigenous males;
  4. identify the life stages and events which put men at greater risk;
  5. be aware of and critically appraise interventions adopted in the area of men’s health;
  6. be aware of the physiological and psychological aspects of women’s life stages and health issues including contraception, menstruation, sexuality and maternal health;
  7. describe strategies for personal and community development on the issues of domestic violence.

Assessment by two examinations (30% each); clinical evaluation (40%).
