Theatre Practice 1A

Contact hours will vary according to the module chosen up to a maximum of 120 hours seminars/practicals. First semester.

Available to level 1 BT students only.

Students enrolling in this subject will undertake modules in either Acting or Production.

Acting

Basic training — The Actor’s “Inner Technique”. Key competencies in the development of ‘inner technique’ towards performance: relaxation, attention, concentration, ‘magic if’, sense memory, memory of physical action, fantasy and imagination.

Production

Technical production students explore all facets of stage lighting for theatre. Areas of study include: types of lanterns and their uses, patching systems, control systems, rigging, focussing and the aesthetics of colour, shadow and lamp usage for theatrical effect.

Learning Objectives:

Acting

  1. to enable students to identify, employ and obtain mastery of fundamental skills necessary to professional practice.

Production

  1. to enable students to identify, employ and obtain mastery of fundamental skills necessary for professional theatre.

Assessment by:

Participation in training process and development in the key areas of “inner techniques” (relaxation - 15%, attention and concentration - 15%, “magic if” - 15%, sense memory - 15%, memory of physical action - 15%, fantasy and imagination - 15%) (90%); creative diary (10%).

Production

Preparation and participation in practicals (25%); practical skills tests as related to various stages of the lighting process (75%).
