Gender and Social Science

This subject establishes an interdisciplinary framework for investigating the significance of gender as an analytical concept in the social sciences. Topics covered include: the historical context of the social sciences as gendered disciplines; gender and family; gender and work; gender and language; gender and the body; gender and the state.
Learning Objectives:
- discuss the historical context of the social sciences as gendered disciplines;
- outline the relevance of gender as a theoretical concept within the social sciences;
- critically evaluate contemporary debates in gender studies in topic areas such as: family, work, language, body and the state;
- reflect on the value of an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of gender;
- use gender in the discussion and analysis of key questions in the social science disciplines.
Assessment by major essay (approximately 2,500 words) (60%); examination (40%).
