Managing Scientific Information

Prerequisites: 15 units from Table Vb or permission of HoS

26 lectures, 26 hours practicals. First semester.

Staff: Dr J Seymour.

Introduction to research techniques, sources of information, surveying the field of study, introduction to writing research funding documents, bibliographic data management, verbal and visual communication of scientific information and conference presentation skills.

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate ability to gather information from major international resources;
  2. demonstrate ability to organise research information into a personal bibliographic database and to generate output in user-specified formats;
  3. demonstrate ability to write and defend a research proposal;
  4. demonstrate ability to utilise database information to support scholarly communication;
  5. organise information into appropriate form for visual and physical presentation;
  6. successfully communicate prepared information.

Assessment by presentation (5%); research proposal and defense (30%); formatted bibliographies (20%); formatting assignment (20%); seminar presentation (25%).
