Health and Rehabilitation

Prerequisites: Admission to MPsych or permission of Course Co-ordinator

39 hours flexible delivery including seminars, workshops and video conferencing. First semester.

This subject will provide knowledge of models of health and health compromising behaviours, and relevant causes of morbidity and mortality. The application of psychological theory to understanding, management, and rehabilitation will be addressed with particular emphasis being given to community health and rehabilitation. Also included will be an analysis of social and cultural influences on health, health in the workplace and areas of specific concern in health (e.g. the aged, rural health).

Learning Objectives:

  1. understanding of the relationship between the environment, behaviour, cognition and health;
  2. knowledge of ways in which individual, group and community based psychological approaches may contribute to the modification, prevention, or rehabilitation of health associated problems;
  3. an ability to critically evaluate research and programs in health psychology and behavioural medicine;
  4. knowledge of the interactions between the health-care consumer and health-care providers and issues associated with particular problem areas;
  5. knowledge of the effects on behaviour of various medications and awareness of the influence these may have on psychologically based programs.

Assessment by seminar papers and presentations (2) addressing specific topics and reviewing relevant literature (40%); discussion paper (3,000 words) in an area of interest to the student (35%); written examination (25%).
