Neuropsychological Dysfunction

Prerequisites: Admission to MPsych or permission of Course Co-ordinator

39 hours seminars and practical workshops. First semester.

Available only to MPsych (Clinical&Health) students or with permission of the course coordinator.

This subject is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the effects on cognitive, emotional and behavioural functions of various central nervous system disorders of the adult brain. A major focus is the evaluation of relevant behaviours for the purposes of diagnosis, treatment planning, prognosis, and rehabilitation. Some basic knowledge of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, psychopathology and advanced psychometric assessment will be assumed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. knowledge of brain behaviour relationships;
  2. knowledge of the neuropsychological sequelae of more common neurological disorders;
  3. development of an experimental-clinical approach to the delineation of deficits for purposes of ongoing management;
  4. ability to select appropriate assessment tools and to administer, score and interpret the subsequent results;
  5. ability to develop suitable rehabilitation/ management plans for different disorders.

Assessment by practical case study 1: administration, scoring, interpretation and reporting a neuropsychological assessment (30%); seminar presentation (30%); compilation of a neuropsychology resource book (20%); written examination (20%).
