Advanced Topics in Psychology

Prerequisites: Completion of level 3 psychology studies

48 lectures, 24 tutorials. Full year.

Available to psychology students who have completed three years of study and who have been accepted into level 4 of the psychology program.

This subject encompasses six 6-week or intensive mode modules covering advanced psychology topics. Students must take the six modules offered, along with PY4050 to complete their level 4 studies in psychology. The modules cover: (a) ethics and professional practice; (b) advanced statistical methods; (c) critical perspectives in psychology; (d) cross-cultural psychology; (e) current theoretical and research issues in psychology and other year-specific options. 26 hours of additional seminar attendance is required.

Learning Objectives:

  1. have a good understanding of professional practice and ethical issues in psychology;
  2. have a good understanding of critical issues and concerns with respect to societal and other profession views of the discipline and practice of psychology;
  3. have a good understanding of the nature and scope of cross-cultural psychology and the culture-specific limitations of Western psychology as discipline and practice;
  4. have a good understanding of a diverse spectrum of sophisticated data analytic procedures and approaches;
  5. have a good, in-depth, understanding of a number of current research areas within psychology.

Assessment by examination, presentation and/or written assignment.
