The subject presents empirical approaches to understanding maladaptive behaviour, psychosocial disorders and dysfunctions in all age groups. The current paradigms of abnormal behaviour and approaches to intervention will be examined and compared, along with the problems associated with psychological diagnosis and assessment. Symptomatologies, theories and research findings will be presented from an integrative perspective that stresses the importance of multifactorial rather than unifactorial approaches to the explanations of psychological problems.

- to gain an understanding of theoretical perspectives in psychopathology;
- to gain knowledge of the principles of diagnosis and assessment;
- to gain awareness of the major areas of psychological dysfunction;
- to gain an understanding of current perspectives on treatment for psychological dysfunction.
Assessment by class presentation and write up (25%); essay (25%); examination (50%).
