Issues in Contemporary Photography

This subject examines the many issues that concern the photographer in contemporary society, such as the use of the digital camera and computer imaging. These issues are analysed in their historical context and the role of the photographer assessed accordingly. Examination of the appropriation of the photographic medium by technology will be done in parallel with highlighting the photographer’s own work practices.
Learning Objectives:
- extrapolate from the ethical issues that have challenged the professional photographer in historical contexts;
- identify the current and emergent issues confronting the photographer across a range of professional roles in contemporary society;
- probe the ethical dilemmas – potential and actual – implicit in these issues;
- evaluate photographic work practices in the light of these issues and dilemmas.
Assessment by journal comprising lecture/tutorial notes and own research (15%); tutorial attendance and participation (20%); rationale for and development of a code of personal photographic ethics (25%); written proposal and final presentation of an approved project – this should comprise half written and half practical work (40%).
