Nutritional Physiology and Metabolism

This subject will cover the anatomy and physiology of the digestive tract (neural/ hormonal control of movement, digestion and absorption) and the metabolism of the major nutrients absorbed. These will be considered in the context of humans and domestic animals during growth, pregnancy, lactation and exercise.
Learning Objectives:
- understand the anatomy and physiology of the digestive tract of the human, pig and ruminant animal;
- be able to draw on the similarities and differences among these species to better understand the types and amounts of nutrients absorbed and the ways these are partitioned and utilised by body tissues;
- know of ethical considerations in human and animal experimentations and be able to appropriately manage and care for animals used in nutritional experiments;
- be able to update and discuss their knowledge of this subject by critically evaluating published research papers.
Assessment by examination (60%); practicals (27%); tutorials (13%).
