Globalisation, Business and the State
Townsville
Inadmissable Subject Combination: PL3201
52 contact hours. Second semester.
Staff: Assoc. Professor H Lesbirel.
This subject introduces students to the business of government policies and the impacts that government policies have on business in the context of globalisation. It emphasises the nature and structure of fusion between state, business and other political actors in comparative perspective. The changing involvement of government in domestic and international business activities makes it essential for political, corporate and bureaucratic leaders to understand the dynamics and complexities of government-business relations and the varying forms of intervention if they are to be effective in responding to external changes. It will provide students with analytical tools to assess key aspects of business-government relations including regime, political and country risk analysis.
Learning Objectives:
- to provide students with the ability to conceptualise the interactions between state, business and other societal interests;
- to provide students with skills to assess the changing nature and structure of business-government relations in comparative and international perspective;
- to enable students to relate theoretical political science concerns to several significant practical aspects of understanding government-business relations;
- to develop team-based skills in political and policy research collaboration.
Assessment by presentations, research essay and examination.
