Southeast Asia in the Global Political Economy

Prerequisites: 3 units of level 1 HI or PL subjects

This subject examines Southeast Asia’s increasingly significant role in world affairs. It examines the impact of the Cold War on its relationship with countries such as China, Japan, USA, Russia and Australia. It considers the development of regionalism in Southeast Asia, especially in the post-Cold War period, focussing on the development of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). The region’s relationship with other groupings such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) and the European Union (EU) will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to introduce students to selected theoretical perspectives on international relations/international political economy and regionalism;
  2. to enable students to identify underlying factors, including norms and practices, which have contributed to the development of regionalism in Southeast Asia and the region’s new role in the world political economy.

Assessment by tutorial assignments, attendance and participation (40%); major essay (30%); examination (30%).
