A study of social, economic and political characteristics of present-day Australia and of their impact upon politics. Topics include societal divisions, trade unions, women, environmental issues, Aboriginal politics and the influence of the media.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop a closer interest in current events;
  2. to evaluate these events critically;
  3. to apply textbook analysis to contemporary issues;
  4. to develop research skills;
  5. to develop a structured argument based on informed sources;
  6. to source information using appropriate methods.

Assessment by essay (25%); tutorial essay (15%); tutorial participation (10%); examination (50%).
