Pharmaceutics 1

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Pharmacy.

This subject provides an introduction to biopharmaceutical aspects which influence the absorption, distribution, metabolism of drugs and consequently, the design of drug dosage formulation. Students will be introduced to the systems of weights and maeasures, equipment, calculations and techniques used in preparation of extemporaneous pharmaceutical formulations. Various routes of drug administration, drug delivery systems and the packaging, labelling and storage of pharmaceuticals will be examined. A review of elementary mathematics will be provided in preparation for the second year of this subject.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understand the fundamental principles of biopharmaceutics and their influence on dosage form design;
  2. understand the various routes of drug administration and of appropriate drug delivery systems;
  3. ability to understand and practise common pharmaceutical calculations with an appreciation of the need for accuracy;
  4. understand the equipment, ingredients and manipulative techniques used in extemporaneous compounding of pharmaceutical products;
  5. understand the packaging, labelling and storage requirements of extemporaneously prepared pharmaceuticals;
  6. understand the component parts of the prescription.

Assessment by a three-hour end-of-semester examination (75%); tutorial assignments (25%). Satisfactory performance in all aspects of the subject is required to pass. All tutorial assignments must be completed and attendance at tutorials is mandatory.
