Rural and Urban Practice 2

Townsville

Prerequisites: OT3004

21 hours supervision, 30 hours flexible contact, 250 hours clinical placement. First and second semester and summer school.

Available to level 2 and above Occupational Therapy students.

Staff: Fieldwork Educator.

The subject will provide a minimum of 250 hours (seven weeks at 36 hours) of supervised clinical placement with flexible support from the University to integrate previous academic material and from clinical experience in OT3004, with a new observational and practical clinical training. The placement will be either rural or urban and will enable the student to apply, utilise and develop the theories and principle of occupational therapy in a variety of settings.

Learning Objectives:

  1. ability to use more advanced observational and evaluation techniques for assessing the client’s health or disability status;
  2. ability to demonstrate data collection techniques for total quality management of the client and/or training facility;
  3. ability to critically analyse the inter-relationship between occupational therapy theory, research and intervention;
  4. demonstrate higher problem solving skills in formulating aims of intervention and applying therapeutic activities and techniques in a culturally aware manner across the spectrum of rural and urban settings;
  5. demonstrate an ability to integrate physical and psychological intervention available to occupational therapists across the lifespan;
  6. demonstrate an increased competence in communication skills to enable therapeutic interactions with clients;
  7. demonstrate an awareness of and ability to work in a variety of environments, including health facilities, community services, educational and industrial services, the home or private enterprise.

Assessment by clinical fieldwork performance report (pass/fail); attendance record (pass/fail); individual learning contract with supervisor (30%); placement resource portfolio (70%). The clinical fieldwork performance report must be passed for accreditation. The learning contract and resource portfolio provide a University grade for this subject.
