Intensive Care Nursing 1

13 tutorials, 160 hours practicals, 26 hours flexible delivery. First semester.
Applicants are required to be eligible for registration as a nurse in Queensland or elsewhere in Australia; hold a recognised undergraduate degree in nursing or a related discipline or its equivalent as approved by the Head of the School of Nursing Sciences; have 12 months minimum postgraduate clinical experience.
This subject explores the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills required by registered nurses when caring for patients in the intensive care unit. Content includes managing the physical and psychosocial needs for patients with complex health care problems, clinical problem-solving and introduction to technological interventions. Competency-based clinical assessment will occur during the clinical practice component of the subject.
Learning Objectives:
- apply knowledge and skills to implement and evaluate contemporary intensive care nursing practice in relation to patient and family-centred care;
- critically assess and monitor intensive care patients within the context of a technological environment;
- apply a problem-solving approach to plan and implement individualised nursing care for critically ill patients.
