Mental Health Nursing Practice 2 Child and Adolescent Issues

Prerequisites: NS5310
30 contact hours, 100 clinical hours. Block mode. Second semester.
Available to students who have registration as a nurse; preferably with Bachelors preparation in nursing or a related discipline, and who have undertaken, or co-enrolled, in NS5310.
This subject will look at developmental stages from a bio-psycho-sociocultural perspective as the child progresses from dependence to the developing autonomy of an adolescent. By examining the child/adolescent in the community and in collaboration with the family the student nurse will view the interaction with the environment at beginning stages of adaptation problem development. Theories of child and adolescent development, models of education specific to children and adolescents, adaptive to maladaptive responses to child/adolescent experiences, theories of family and group dynamics, culturally relevant assessment tools, psychological and intelligence testing and its implications for nursing interventions, counselling models and therapies, and legal and ethical issues specific to child and adolescent will be addressed.
Learning Objectives:
- describe the physical, emotional, psychological and sexuality development of both children and adolescents;
- demonstrate a knowledge of current models and theories of care addressing child/adolescent maladaptive responses;
- identify familial, environmental and personal factors contributing to risk behaviours;
- identify the child/adolescent care needs using a variety of age appropriate tools, and collaboratively plan with child and carer the culturally appropriate interventions and health education;
- demonstrate a knowledge of legal and ethical issues pertinent to the care and rights of children, adolescents and their carers;
- demonstrate the ability to facilitate child, adolescent and family therapy groups.
