Physiological Processes in Midwifery

Flexible delivery. First semester.
Available to students who have registration as a nurse; Bachelor’s preparation in nursing or a related discipline; twelve months clinical nursing practice prior to commencement of the course.

Aspects of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and microbiology relevant to normal pregnancy, labour and lactation.
Learning Objectives:
- anatomy of male and female reproductive systems and the biology of sex;
- physiological processes of fertilisation, pregnancy labour and the peurperium;
- physiology of pain and the interventions appropriate to childbirth;
- embryology and foetal development;
- immunology and infections as relevant to pregnance/labour.
Students will be encouraged to think independently about these topics, conduct literature searches and will participate in regularly scheduled discussion groups.
On-course assessment (100%).
