Midwifery Practice 2

200 hours clinical placement. A 5-day residential learning school at commencement of second semester. Flexible delivery.

This subject integrates a number of perspectives from which midwifery practice draws. The modular learning structure includes issues related to the postpartum woman and family, lactation, the normal neonate. Situation-based learning is applied to this subject.
Learning Objectives:
- apply knowledge and skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate contemporary midwifery practice in relation to the birthing family;
- utilise critical thinking and problem solving skills to explore issues pertinent to the birthing family;
- facilitate the establishment of a mutually satisfying feeding relationship;
- apply a problem solving approach to the care of the puerperal woman and her baby;
- utilise the concepts of health promotion and education in the planning of care within the context of the family unit according to age, well being, socio-cultural background and environment;
- foster a multidisciplinary team approach.
