Piano Accompaniment 1

26 lectures, 52 hours practicals. Full year.

This subject will involve training in a variety of piano accompanying skills, including vocal, strings, woodwind, brass and percussion accompaniment. It will also include orchestral reductions, transposition, repetiteur work and other relevant areas. Students enrolled in this subject will be assigned to two instrumentalists and/or vocalists within Music and will be responsible for the accompaniment needs of these students. All students will present an essay on an approved topic relevant to one of the accompaniment skills covered in lectures.
Learning Objectives:
- develop skills in accompaniment rehearsal and performance techniques;
- attain knowledge of piano accompaniment repertoire and styles;
- enhance pianistic and musical skills through the assimilation of a variety of keyboard techniques.
Assessment by attendance and participation at lectures (20%); two examined accompaniment performances (30%); accompaniment journal (20%); 1,500-2,000 word essay (20%); reports from instrumentalists/vocalists being accompanied (10%).
