Builds on the general jazz history. The subject provides a focus on the elements of jazz and improvisation (form, texture and harmony) employed by numerous artists in varying jazz styles.
Learning Objectives:
- a deeper appreciation of the various styles of jazz;
- an understanding of the manner in which jazz has developed throughout the 20th century;
- a knowledge of the musical tools used by artists in different jazz styles;
- an enhanced knowledge of jazz forms, harmony and timbre.
Assessment by mid-semester aural examination (25%); end-of-semester aural examination (25%); essay (2,500 words) (50%).
