Essentials of Music

Townsville, Cairns

13 lectures, 26 hours practicals, 13 hours workshops. Second semester (Townsville campus); first semester (Cairns campus).

This subject covers the foundations of music theory through to major and minor tonality and chords. Ear training and sight reading are integrated into this study. Music literacy skills are developed in the context of a repertoire suitable for use in primary and early childhood classrooms.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to acquire an understanding of the rudiments of music and expand theoretical knowledge of duration, pitch, musical form and expression to a level commensurate with that demanded of a teacher implementing a comprehensive music program in schools;
  2. acquire a repertoire of folk songs and school music suitable for application in school teaching contexts;
  3. to develop the ability to read and write music at a basic level.

Progressive assessment (100%).
