Overview of bulk solids handling systems. Properties of bulk solids. Design of bins: mass and funnel flow bins, wall pressures, critical arching dimensions and feeders. Belt conveyor systems: system elements, arrangement, sizing and selection of components. Pneumatic conveying systems: system elements, types, design parameters, sizing and selection of components. Slurry transport. Particle size reduction processes: e.g. ball mills. Particle size classification processes.
Learning Objectives:
- to demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental properties of bulk solids and the basic design principles of common bulk solids handling equipment.
Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
