Material Selection in Design

Townsville

Prerequisites: ME2525

39 lectures, 39 hours workshops. First semester.

Available to level 3 mechanical engineering and mechatronics students.

Technical report writing and oral presentation. Material selection and application in design: use of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, metal alloys, plastics, composites, synthetic and natural rubbers, etc. Introduction to tribology: elementary contact mechanics, friction, wear and lubrication.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop student’s technical communications skills;
  2. to enhance student knowledge of the use of traditional and non-traditional materials in design;
  3. to provide students with a knowledge of the fundamentals of tribology.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
