Ecology of Tropical Mangrove Ecosystems

30 lectures, 8 tutorials, 6 hours practicals, 8 hours field work/field project. Second semester. Students will be required to attend lectures and practical classes in MB3220.

Available to students specialising in Marine Ecology and Fisheries Biology in the Graduate Diploma and Master of Applied Science courses.

The subject covers four major areas in Tropical Estuarine Systems: botanical aspects of tropical estuaries; physical and geochemical environment in estuaries; biological properties and components and physiological adaptations and tolerances. Emphasis will be based on the biological aspects of tropical estuaries, especially ichthyofauna and the physiological aspects of coping with this variable environment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of the current state of knowledge of the patterns and processes occurring within tropical estuaries;
  2. critically evaluate previously published research in the field of tropical estuarine ecology;
  3. present written work in a scientific format.

Assessment by a two-hour examination (40%); tutorials and colloquium (30%); assignments (30%).
