English for Academic Purposes

Townsville, Cairns

39 tutorials. First and second semester.

Available to students from non-English speaking backgrounds who have studied in a language other than English to at least Year 10 level (NESB). This subject requires a minimum enrolment of 10 students.

This subject focuses on analysing ideas within an interpretive framework; developing independent, critical styles of thinking; developing speculative, hypothesising skills; developing reference skills; developing confidence and competence in participation in academic speaking contexts; through note taking from spoken and written texts; interpreting graphs, tables, diagrams; writing for different purposes e.g. notes, essays, summaries and reports; using appropriate layout, conventions and register; understanding roles in seminars — leader/member/reporter; recognising discourse patterns and markers. Students will use English discipline-specific reference materials in the context of Australian Tertiary Education.

Learning Objectives:

  1. on completion of the course, NESB students will have developed a level of competence in the 4 macro-skills in English, to be able to successfully engage in academic studies in a wide range of disciplines in an Australian university.

Students will be required to complete tasks related to the subject objectives and assessment of these tasks will be made on a continuous basis. They will be required to complete oral and written presentations on an advanced project during the final stages of the course. Students will be expected to attend 80% of scheduled classes unless prior approval has been given.
