Clinical Legal Studies

Townsville

Prerequisites: Level 3 LA subjects

Approximately 40 hours practicals and 26 hours theory. Second semester.

Available to students enrolled in the second last or last year of LLB studies, on application as a quota applies.

This subject involves several components, namely, a theory/instruction component; clinical/practical component and a reflective component. Theory/instruction will take approximately 26 hours in the first four weeks of semester and will be conducted at the Townsville Community Legal Service Inc. Students will receive instruction regarding file management; office procedures; confidentiality; professional standards and ethics and client interview techniques. Clinical/practical will involve the student as an observer in ‘real’ client interviews; and as an adviser in both supervised and unsupervised interviews. This component also takes into account general file management – the drafting of file memos and letters of advice. This component is expected to take up to 40 hours. It is expected that the students will attend the Community Legal Centre up to one day per fortnight.

Some flexibility is required from students regarding attendance times. Details will be shown in the subject outline.

Assessment by client interviewing performance (20%); professional log (20%); policy submission (group project) (30%); written advices, letters, file memos etc (30%) (subject to variation).
