Foreign News

Townsville, Cairns

13 lectures, 20 tutorials. Second semester.

Available to students who have at least 18 units of JN subjects, to graduate Journalism students and to students entitled to miscellaneous enrolment. A quota may be applied, with admission to the subject determined by level of assessment in previously taken Journalism subjects, or equivalent achievement in practice as a journalist.

Staff: Mrs E Hart (Townsville campus); Dr J Norgate (Cairns campus).

The subject will give students a further opportunity to specialise in a field that is highly characteristic in its own right, while drawing on generic studies in journalism. The work will entail participation in a well established sector of journalism and mass media scholarship and give valuable practical experience in a demanding environment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop knowledge of the principles and practice of journalism by an examination of foreign news, including the significance of foreign news in Australian life, its place in international relations and news values expressed in foreign news;
  2. to develop high proficiency in media skills related to foreign news.

Assessment by exercises set at intervals during the semester; structured assessment of seminar participation; formal review and evaluation of performance in field practice.
