News Gathering Techniques

This is a practical subject that introduces students to information gathering techniques used by working journalists in print and radio. Students are taught to gather information effectively and ethically and to shape it into news. Students will develop research and investigative skills, such as analysing business and parliamentary reports, writing court and local government reports, science and technology reporting, conducting property and company searches and utilising freedom of information laws. Students will be introduced to techniques and practices of print and radio media.
Learning Objectives:
- to build on news-writing and interviewing skills in a real reporting environment.
Assessment by participation in tutorials/workshops; regular assignments; end-of-semester portfolio.
