Tertiary teaching needs to take account of the diversity of learners now present in tertiary education. It provides a critical analysis of theories, concepts and techniques of tertiary teaching and the application of these to the participants’ own teaching. Material covered includes concepts of teaching and learning, course design, effective presentation of material to facilitate learning, effective teaching of small and large groups, assessment and course evaluation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide introductory knowledge of theories, models, concepts and techniques in tertiary teaching;
  2. to encourage critical analysis of such theories, models, concepts and techniques appropriate to the diversity of students in tertiary institutions;
  3. to facilitate and enable participants to apply course material directly to their own teaching practice;
  4. to encourage innovation in course and subject design and in teaching techniques;
  5. to model contemporary best practice in teaching in presentation and exploration of the subject.

Assessment by report (30%); essay (70%).
