Field Procedures in Indigenous Research

Flexible delivery, plus compulsory five-day block. First semester.
Available to students undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate, the Postgraduate Diploma or the Master of Indigenous Studies, or other postgraduate students.

This subject provides an in-depth study of procedures required for conducting research into Indigenous communities. It focuses on procedural issues raised within the School’s Research Ethics Guideline Document (draft) and other relevant documents. It addresses the issues of conduct and behaviour, consultation stages, interviewing and culturally appropriate research material and dissemination and application of outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
- an understanding of acceptable protocols in the respective communities being researched;
- an ability to deal with sensitive political issues relating to research in Indigenous communities;
- a respect for Indigenous people’s expectations with respect to their conduct and behaviour in Indigenous communities;
- a responsible and positive attitude towards Indigenous people’s interests and concerns;
- the ability to conduct a small scale research project.
Assessment by attendance and completion of minor assignments at five-day block (30%); major assignment (70%).
