Cross-cultural Training for Indigenous Contexts

Townsville

40 hours workshops, 12 hours flexible delivery. Second semester.

Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies and second and third year undergraduate students.

This subject will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the cultures of Indigenous Australians within the broader Australian society by examining the process for colonisation; the historical and social factors which have shaped the relationships between Indigenous Australians and non-Indigenous Australians, students will then focus on these implications within employment contexts.

This is a practical subject, designed to provide students with opportunities to develop effective strategies for working cross-culturally with Indigenous Australians.

Learning Objectives:

  1. acquire knowledge regarding the histories, cultures and identities of Indigenous Australian peoples;
  2. gain knowledge of legislation and policies affecting Indigenous Australians across time;
  3. gain knowledge of policies and programs relating to Indigenous Australian employment;
  4. develop the capacity to implement effective cross-cultural training strategies in the workplace context.

Assessment by attendance and participation in block study units (20%); four minor assessment tasks each 10% (total 40%); reflective journal (10%); major assignment of 2000 words (30%).
