Community Management and Development 2

26 lectures, 26 tutorials. First or second semester on-campus and flexible delivery (Townsville campus); first and second semester flexible delivery (Cairns campus).

This subject will provide students with introduction to how and why Indigenous community based organisations were and are formed.

Community based studies will be contextualised within the Australian political system allowing students to develop ‘a big picture’ of the nature of Indigenous Affairs within the Australian political system.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of the historical, political, social and cultural frameworks of Indigenous affairs (in the Australian context);
  2. develop a rights based terms of reference in critically analysing government policies towards Indigenous Australians;
  3. develop an understanding of the unique nature of Indigenous organisations;
  4. gain an understanding of the unique relationship between Government/s and Indigenous peoples;
  5. gain a knowledge of human rights and social justice and the role of advocacy in promoting Indigenous well-being;
  6. gain an understanding of how community development processes are applied in establishing Indigenous organisations which address Indigenous issues.

Assessment by attendance (10%); participation (10%); journal (activities-based) (30%); oral seminar (20%); formal academic writing (30%).
