Introduction to Journalism

Available to Diploma of Communications students.

This subject contains broad instruction in the craft of journalism, focusing on news analysis, the writing of news stories, interview techniques and research.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with basic skills in news gathering in a way which articulates into the communications diploma;
  2. to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with a basic understanding of the range of skills required to be a newspaper journalist;
  3. to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to become familiar with and use the language and concepts of mainstream journalism;
  4. to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to observe and analyse the structures of mainstream journalism so that they might better apply skills learnt when they return to their own communities;
  5. to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to develop their news sense.

Assessment by on-campus assignments and practicals (60%); off-campus assignment (20%); attendance and participation (20%).
