Introduction to Print I

Available to Diploma of Communications students.

This subject covers the principles of writing for print media such as newspapers, magazines and newsletters and includes instruction in print production using modern technology (desktop publishing software).

Learning Objectives:

  1. provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with the basic skills required to put together a community newsletter;
  2. introduce students to the technology required to produce a printed publication;
  3. enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to become familiar with and use the standard of grammar required in mainstream journalism;
  4. enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to edit, design, layout and print their own stories;
  5. enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to study the possibilities of culturally appropriate print media in remote communities;
  6. introduce students to a wide range of print media dealing with international, national, State and local issues as they affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Assessment by on-campus assignments and practicals (60%); off-campus assignment (20%); attendance and participation (20%).
