Australian Indigenous Media

Available to Diploma of Communications students.

Staff: Ms C Togo.

All forms of media used by Indigenous Australians will be examined, including communication in traditional culture. The history of Indigenous electronic media will be taught along with the present role and workings of NIMAA (National Indigenous Media Association). The National Radio and Television Networks will be examined.

The history and role of BRACS and urban media associations, especially CAMA (Central Australian Media Association) will be taught.

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate a knowledge of communication in traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture;
  2. explain the history of Indigenous broadcasting in Australia;
  3. explain the history and role of media in the student’s community;
  4. debate the future of Indigenous media in Australia.

Assessment by class exercises (10%); one examination (30%); one on campus written assignment (30%); attendance and participation (20%); one off-campus assignment (10%).
