Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students and other undergraduate students.
In this subject, students will be presented with profiles of Torres Strait Islander communities. They will examine and analyse the developmental processes and management practices applied to operate the Island communities. Topics to be covered are funding, municipal responsibilities of the community councils, CDEP operations, enterprise and community organisations. Students will also examine the effects of development on traditional life of the Torres Strait Islanders. Further, this subject will provide the students with the knowledge and skills to critically analyse the activities and programs provided by the governments. In particular the students will examine government administrative responsibilities, bureaucracy, social welfare, education, health, housing and infrastructure, transport, communication, media, economic development, enterprise, art and recreation, initiatives for language and cultural maintenance.
Learning Objectives:
- an understanding of the council and government activities and programs, their causes and effect on Torres Strait Islander communities;
- an awareness of the diverse range of, or lack of, resources, facilities and services provided to Torres Strait Islander communities;
- an ability to critically evaluate the council and government activities and programs. How they meet the community needs;
- knowledge of economic development in communities.
Assessment by essay (40%); tutorial presentation (20%); examination (30%); attendance and participation (10%).
