Australia’s Indigenous Languages

Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students and other undergraduate students.
A brief introduction to the theory and major concepts of linguistics. The study will examine in detail the phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics of Indigenous languages of Australia. Other linguistic topics include sociolinguistics in relation to Indigenous languages. In this subject students will be provided with basic skills to analyse a language linguistically.
Learning Objectives:
- an ability to recognise the Indigenous languages as an important part of the cultural heritage of the Indigenous Australians;
- an appreciation of the complex nature of the Indigenous languages;
- an understanding of the Indigenous language situation and main linguistic features of the Indigenous languages;
- a responsible and positive attitude towards these languages.
Assessment by essay (40%); tutorial presentation (20%); examination (30%); attendance and participation (10%).
