Illness Experience for Health Professionals

This subject will introduce health professionals to contemporary models of health care and their influence on the wellness-illness experience for clients. Specifically, the organisation of health care and its impact on the transitions from wellness to illness will be examined. Subject content is applied to current health care practices so that students will have an increased understanding of how inclusion, exclusion and marginalisation can effect the preservation of health. Issues that must be considered in planning health care services that are responsive to the needs of all community groups are broadly addressed.
Learning Objectives:
- describe contemporary models of health care;
- explain the organisation of health care and its impact upon the transitions from wellness to illness;
- discuss the effect of inclusion, exclusion and marginalisation on the preservation of health;
- outline strategies that must be considered in the planning of health care services to ensure responsiveness to the health needs of individual groups in the community;
- discover how the perspective of lived experience can mobilise personal strengths in the transitions from wellness to illness;
- explore the range of personal/community choices within current models of care that are available within the health care system.
