Technical Proficiencies for Health Professionals

Townsville

26 lectures, 26 tutorials. First and second semester. Flexible delivery.

Available to level 1 and level 2 Health Science students.

This subject teaches literacy skills needed by contemporary health professionals. Topics include report writing and grant submissions. Computer literacy is taught with moderate expertise in at least one wordprocessing program, as well as one database or spreadsheet program. Basic skills are taught for electronic communication. Oral presentation skills are developed with a focus on practical experience. This is a competency-based subject.

Learning Objectives:

Computer Proficiency

  1. know the basic physical components of a personal computer;
  2. know how to format and copy a disk;
  3. have a working knowledge of Windows and its accessories;
  4. produce a high quality printed document using a sophisticated wordprocessing program;
  5. design a file, input and manipulate data in either a database or a spreadsheet program.

Writing Proficiency

  1. know the importance of the audience;
  2. know how to write material that actively and interestingly communicates an accurate message;
  3. given the required information and raw data, use the appropriate software to produce a high quality printed report;
  4. know how to write an application to a funding source;
  5. understand the factors that can increase success in funding applications.

Electronic Communication Proficiency

  1. know the major programs and functions of the Internet;
  2. ability to use email to communicate with an individual, send binary attachments, subscribe to an email discussion group;
  3. ability to use the World Wide Web to locate data, download files, download images.

Oral Presentation Proficiency

  1. know the essentials of oral presentation in the health sciences;
  2. know the basic processes involved in oral communication;
  3. demonstrate proficiency in the basic processes involved in oral communication;
  4. know the importance of the audience and be able to target presentations to different groups;
  5. be competent in making effective use of audio-visual aid when presenting.
