Nationalism and Revolution in Southeast Asia

A study of Southeast Asia from around 1900 to the Japanese and immediate post-war periods. This subject examines the origins and meanings of nationalist sentiments and independence movements, peasant forms of resistance, the role of youth and the consequences of the Japanese occupation.
Learning Objectives:
- to acquire a basic knowledge of selected countries in the region in the 20th-century;
- to understand the formation of national consciousness;
- to understand the emergence of independent states in the region;
- to appreciate the challenges faced by nationalist historians.
Assessment by examination (30%); essay (30%); tutorial assignments, attendance and participation (40%).
