Southeast Asia: Local Cultures Foreign Powers

An introduction to the broad themes of Southeast Asian history and ways of life. This subject examines the cultures and political systems of indigenous societies and their interactions with foreign, largely European, powers from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to understand at a basic level the distinctive views about society and the world in Southeast Asian cultures;
  2. to understand foreign-local relationships and the resulting cultural, political and economic transformations;
  3. to develop a sensitivity to the various approaches to writing Southeast Asian history;
  4. to appreciate Australia’s historical links with Southeast Asia.

Assessment by examination (30%); major essay (30%); tutorial assignments, attendance and participation (40%).
