Urban social and community planning is concerned with the analysis and understanding of social and ethnic groups within the urban environment. As a sector within the discipline of planning it sets out to identify community characteristics and to assess their needs and those significant issues that impact upon them. The provision of services, housing and appropriate community responses form core components of this subject and examples will be drawn from within Australia and the Asia Pacific region.
Learning Objectives:
- provide an understanding of community needs as a basis for planning;
- plan culturally-appropriate communities;
- provide techniques whereby planners can learn an appreciation of cross-cultural and socio-economic diversity in meeting community needs;
- widen the scope of planning training to incorporate greater social awareness.
Assessment by coursework (70%); final examination (30%).
