This subject introduces biogeographical aspects affecting the Australian biota. The course content emphasises arid zone and savanna environments and the role of fire as an ecological factor.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to develop an understanding of the major factors controlling the distribution of the Australian biota;
  2. to develop an understanding of the functioning of Australian ecosystems, especially in savanna and arid zone environments;
  3. to consider ecological aspects of contemporary environmental change.

Assessment by essay; field report; examination; tutorial paper. Weightings will be decided in consultation with students.
