Effective Scientific Writing

Townsville

13 lectures, 20 hours workshops. Subject offered in three-hour blocks once per week. First semester.

Available to Honours and postgraduate science students.

Staff: Ms R Dunn.

Writing will be done both in the workshops and at home.

Major topics include: basic grammar, syntax and punctuation; planning, developing and editing work; practical application in literature reviews, journal articles, reports and thesis.

Learning Objectives:

  1. a knowledge of fundamental grammar, syntax and punctuation;
  2. an audience-centered, reader-oriented approach to writing;
  3. an awareness of the interdependence of analytical skills and clear expression;
  4. an understanding of the key stages in the writing process (planning, writing, editing);
  5. an appreciation of effective writing and the ability to apply these techniques to writing.

Assessment by paraphrase (20%); practical report (20%); article/report (25%); literature review (25%); grammar test (10%).
