Women in Literature

Prerequisites: At least 6 units of EL subjects including 3 units of literature subjects

A study of selected fiction, biography and poetry by modern women writers in English. Feminist critical theory will be considered as well as the nature and impact of popular writing for women.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to broaden and intensify the literary-critical skills and understanding attained by students at earlier levels, particularly where essay-writing and extra-literary issues are concerned;
  2. to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of the set texts;
  3. to acquire a representative knowledge of the evolution of twentieth-century women’s fiction in a range of English-speaking countries, including Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand and the USA;
  4. to acquire a knowledge of contemporary drama and poetry by Australian women;
  5. to achieve a sound understanding of a range of feminist theories and an ability to apply them appropriately to literary texts;
  6. to develop an awareness of women’s spirituality as expressed in literature;
  7. to achieve an understanding of the place of women’s literature in society and an awareness of how literature and literary study contributes to women’s self-conception and social positioning;
  8. to develop an ability to analyse popular romance and science fiction writing relevant to women.

Assessment by two essays of 1,500 words each (40%); weekly tutorial participation (20%); one three-hour examination (40%).
