Creative Writing

Prerequisites: A credit or better in EL1010 or substantial portfolio
Inadmissable Subject Combination: EL1011

26 lecture/workshops, 10 tutorials. First semester.

Students will be admitted to this subject on the basis of a credit or better result in EL1010 or substantial portfolio.

The subject involves both practical and theoretical explorations of the art of creative writing. It covers a wide range of the essential techniques required to create successful poetry, prose and dialogue. An emphasis will be placed upon students developing a broad skills base, rather than specialisation in any one genre. Aspects of presentation, audience reception, editing and cultural contexts will be covered.

Learning Objectives:

  1. students completing this subject should develop skills in writing and editing creative work in a range of genres;
  2. students should be able to present creative work for publication and performance at a professional standard.

Assessment by assignments (30%); class participation (20%); portfolio (50%)
