Energy Production and Distribution

26 lectures, 13 tutorials. Two week vacation block mode. First or second semester.

Available to students enrolled in the Master of Engineering Management course and to other students at the discretion of the Head of School of Engineering.

Overview of energy forms and availability; critical technologies in energy efficiency; building technologies; internal and non-internal combustion systems; case studies in storage, conditioning, distribution and transmission; advanced batteries; power electronics, capacitors; generation – gas turbines, fuel cells, nuclear reactors; renewable energy – solar, thermal, wind turbine, bio-fuels; methods for comparing the different values of energy types; case studies.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide a critical understanding and systematic study of energy generation, storage, distribution and transmission;
  2. to assess the energy needs of a project and determine the appropriate system to be utilised.

Assessment by class participation (20%); assignment (80%).
