Machines, Measurement and Control

39 lectures, 21 tutorials, 18 hours practicals. Second semester.
Available to level 2 engineering and science students.
Section A Machines. Components of a power system. Induced emfs and electromagnetic torque, electrical instruments. Three phase systems and basic characteristics of synchronous, induction, stepper motors and dc machines.
Section B Control. Mathematical modelling of physical systems, open and closed loop control, control sensors and actuators. Concepts of setpoint and load control, compensation and performance criteria for common control systems.
Section C Measurement systems, accuracy, errors, units, static and dynamic characteristics, loading effect, noise, reliability and costing. Basic types of transducers used in the industry for temperature, pressure and flow rate measurements. Signal conditioning. Specialised measurement systems.
Learning Objectives:
- understand the principles of design of measurement systems; to demonstrate knowledge of basic transducers used in industry;
- demonstrate a detailed knowledge, through discussion and design, of the types of transducers available to measure physical parameters using both analogue and digital systems;
- have an understanding of the basic relationships in electromagnetism as applied to determining the terminal characteristics of ac and dc machines, stepper motors and transformers;
- demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts of automatic control using concepts of mathematical models to determine the characteristics of practical systems.
Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
