Issues in the Educare of Young Children

The content of this subject focuses on contemporary trends and developments in early childhood education and the professional knowledge and skills needed by educators in the early childhood field. The subject incorporates a supervised advanced practicum of up to 20 days depending on the candidates experience in early childhood settings.
Topics include early childhood philosophy; theories of developmentally appropriate practice; theories of the development of the whole child (birth to eight); play as a medium for integrating learning; contemporary trends and developments; quality improvement and accreditation; social justice; networking the field; health care and safety; child abuse; legislative requirements; partnerships with parents and liaison with community.
Learning Objectives:
- critically evaluate contemporary trends and developments in the field of early childhood education;
- provide a detailed child study based on observation of the development of the whole child;
- demonstrate knowledge of systems requirements and regulations;
- demonstrate competence in providing stimulating learning environments for young children; demonstrate competence in employing developmentally appropriate, socially just, practice;
- network with community organisations and other systems;
- work in partnerships with parents;
- engage in critical reflective thinking about own practice;
- demonstrate professional commitment to young childrens development.
